All water, no matter where you live is "hard". Only after going through a water softener will it be "soft" water.

All parts of New York City obtain their drinking water from the same system of aqueducts and reservoirs located outside of the city. New York water is generally considered some of the best available anywhere--quite soft and clean. Over a hundred years ago the city invested in a series of reservoirs located in places such as the Catskill Mountains, and a series of deep underground aqueducts to bring the water to the city. They are still expanding the system, with the ongoing work to complete City Aqueduct #3. Use city water without concern--it's great stuff!

Doesn't matter what boro you live in, you have soft water. All our water comes from upstate. you can probably find a map of the water supply system if you want to try and google it. It starts up in the Catskills, or actually maybe a bit further, and it travels down to the city. The largest of our resevoirs closest to the city is at Woodstock, NY, then there is a smaller one at I believe Croton. But, the water starts way up and heads on down. WE actually have some of the best and cleanest water in the country.

I'm from So Cali, but on my trips to NYC...I actually thought the water out there was really soft compared to the water in Los Angeles!
