If you're the customer:
BEFORE you approach the cashier, make sure you have everything. It is rude to hold up the customers who are behind you. Greet the casheir (although usually the cashier has the first greeting). Don't talk on your cell phone or fool with your BlackBerry while cashier is processing your purchase. You need to pay attention to what your items ring up as. Thank the cashier at the end of transaction.

If you're the cashier:
Greet the customer. Ask the customer if they found everything they were looking for. As you ring the items, make sure they are ringing at the correct price. Say the total slowly but clearly. Try not to say : "Eleven twenty-five" (example). Say "You total comes to Eleven dollars and twenty five cents. If the customer is paying cash, count cash aloud before typing it in register. Count the change in customer's hand. NEVER count change on the counter top. Thank the customer for their patronage and tell them to came back soon. :)

Place the things you want to purchace on the counter. The cashier will tally up the total cost and let you know how much you need to pay. You give him or her the money, check, or card to pay for the item. If there is any he or she will give you the change. He or she will place your items in a bag or bags which you should then take, along with the receipt, and leave the store.

You may exchange greetings such as "hello," and "how are you." They may ask if you found everything ok. Respond.

A nice "thank you" at the end of the transaction (when you take your bags) is a good touch.

Smile! Be friendly! They probably don't want to be there - so don't be mean and nasty - they get plenty of that from everyone else! If you need something, ask a question. Be polite, and they will be nice to you, too!

just be casual. you are paying for the things you've purchased from their store so they are more thankful than you are.
