You cannot sleep because your brain is fighting hard to do it's job.
Sleep is when the brain sorts out all our daily thoughts, experiences and emotions and files them away in the recesses of our brains. If we are stressed and/or depressed, the brain goes into overtime. You will probably have very small cat naps. This is when REM sleep occurs which is when the brain does it's sorting work, rather like a little post office. Normally, when we sleep, we go into a very deep sleep for about an hour, then we would have about 20 minutes REM sleep when we are only lightly asleep, and then back to deep sleep again, although not as deeply as previously. This pattern continues throughout the night.
When we are stressed and/or depressed, the deep sleep is reduced or even removed as the brain tried frantically to do it's sorting job.
We then become more tired because we are not getting the deep sleep we need for our bodies to regenerate.
Relaxation techniques are very good for helping the brain calm down to start it's sorting work effectively. It's a bit like us when we try to do too many things at once. We don't get anything done properly.

In addition to this, you need to see your family doctor as soon as possible to get some counselling or therapy.
If you are in the UK and on a low income these people may be able to help you, more quickly.
http://www.counselling.ltd.uk/
They have a database of therapists who will offer free therapy to people on certain benefits and if you do not qualify by being in receipt of the right benefits, they may be able to put you in touch with therapists in your area who may offer therapy at a reduced rate.
I hope that helps you

I have many different methods for combatting insomnia. First picture yourself walking through a place you know very well for example your work place or an old house you used to live in. Go into every room and just picture where everything is in your mind.
Another idea is to drink a cup of milk or horlicks before bed as this relaxes you.
Don't go to bed hungry - very bad move. Eat a banana before you sleep - bananas help you sleep.
You can try a swig of neat whiskey - knocks me out.
Try sleeping on your back and not on your tummy
Don't stay in bed too long if you can't sleep - get up and walk around and then go back to bed.
But best of all - Try praying!!! Pray God will help you in your depression and that he'll help you sleep. And if you find prayer boring or don't usually pray then it could still work for you because when you are bored its easier to sleep! :)

My answer only supplements & complements the other answers above.
The fact of the matter is, at the best, people don't mind your doing well, and at worst, no one really cares enough about you to hate you. But I know it's difficult for a person who has developed paranoia to believe this.
Read Dale Carnegie's famous book: "How to Stop Worrying & Start Living". No one can cure you of this mental and other worries as well Dale does in this book.
All the best!
PS: The fact that so many unknown people care for you, though only up to a point, comes out clearly in these answers.

All the above answers are good ideas, try listening to some music to help you relax, maybe a hot bath before bed. Try to take care of yourself physically, get exercise that will help your stress level. Religious? Listen to Joyce Meyers ideas on how to live a better, stress free life. Lots of good information out there, and you have taken your first step just by asking! Best Wishes.

first thing you could do is call lifeline on 131114, they are a good starting point, it will give you a chance to talk to someone who has an unbiased opinion about you. do you have anyone to talk to at all, a friend, relative?
also try relieving some of the pressure off of yourself by going out for walks and feeding your body good food.
as for the sleeping, try having a hot bath just before bed, followed bya hot drink, about one hour after doing a vigorous 30 minutes of exercise. it sounds like a lot of effort, but it will make you sleep.

yeah i was supposed to go to bed at 12 so i could run some errands tomorrow (well i was supposed to wake up in 2 hours :/) and then i got to thinking and thinking and then i got stir crazy and got on here.. and now it's 7
just take some deep breaths and relax, because whatever you're worrying about can wait until morning. don't give up and i hope you feel better! if you can't sleep you can write a letter to yourself to try and put into words what's going on.. if you feel like venting you can even send it to me :P
i think i've hit my wall and am going to attempt sleep. you should too.

go to a psychiatrist and simultaneously a therapist to talk to. (A pill alone will not solve all). Certain anti depressants can help anxiety like Wellbutrin, or a doc might prescribe xanax or something to help you calm down and slow your racing thoughts so you can sleep. Good luck!
Also, give yoga a try, seriously.

Try this:
Lye in bed, and just go blank (in your mind) relax, push all thoughts out of your head.
Then slowley tell your body to not feel your legs, (turn them off) and work your way up to your neck (do not move at all)
That seems to work for me :)
