Surely you must agree, that too often, the barn owl is portrayed as a cute pet rather than a wild, predatory creature. The public are not discouraged from this view when they are able, without license or legislation, to purchase an owl for as little as £15 from trade-it papers or even on some occasions, pet shops. With benefit of little or no correct information about husbandry or welfare, the result is usually a psychologically and sometimes physically damaged owl which cannot be rehabilitated or released. Who gets to pick up the pieces when the bird is no longer wanted because it has become a food screamer or aggressive? It is a drain on the resources of organizations like the BARN OWL CENTRE in Gloucester, and of those that are illegally released, it is highly unlikely that any survive, but in the event that they do, they are then competition for the indigenous wild population and their introduction is an interference with the ecological stability of the area. It must be stopped in order for the conservation and preservation of the wild species to continue.

If you are in the United States it is a federal crime to possess an owl without a federal permit, which is very difficult to get. Owls are not good pets. They require a diet that would be difficult to provide and they also need to be able to fly. They are really cool looking birds, but not as pets. Even if it were legal, it wouldnt be good for either of you.

OWL as a PET BIRD-
I do not think there is any legality issues for having Owl as a pet bird. It may vary from country to country. After the release of books and Movies of Harry Potter and the popularity of Owls in many European and American countries there is concern about increasing interest in owls as pets.
ABOUT OWLS -
The problem with owls is that they are not suitable as pets. They are beautiful, majestic and awe-inspiring, but they are also large and powerful with extremely sharp talons. They require a steady diet of small animals (fed whole). They are not sociable, and need room to fly in a large aviary, which most people just can't provide. I've worked with owls, and they are amazing and wonderful animals. Just not good pets. Owls like complete darkness and hoot very loudly in the nights disturbing sleep.
In my opinion Owls are sign of Bad Omen and should not be kept as pet..

You may want to check this link from the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service... Owls are an Endangered Species and take very special permits to possess them.

You must have a special license to keep ANY wild bird.
They are not pets, they are a wild animal.
Keep this in mind: simply perching on your unprotected arm, an owl's talon can pierce through to the bone.

Not an expert I suggest you ask at a zoo or a vet.
Bear in mind giving one to a kid whos a harry potter fan may be a real dumb idea when it comes to feeding it, it needing a mate or it ripping the kids face off with talons and beak.
Cerainly avoid cocatoos etc which can live to 100, are very intelligent, emotional and jealous

If you need to ask this question then leave them alone.
In the UK it is illegal to keep a bird of prey without a licence. And absolutely illegal to take one from the wild punishable by a prison sentance

They require a lot of attention, and specialist care.
I would advise against it unless you have previous experience of keeping this type of animal.
