No because breed bans do not work. It is the owners that choose to own dangerous dogs regardless of breed that should be punished. Banning pitbulls will not deter those that use dogs for illegal means because they do not follow the law anyway and if bans are put into effect they can and will just move on to another breed.

Why has it taken so Long for people to figure out Pit Bulls are DANGEROUS?
In the first 60 years of the 20th century Pit bulls were the most popular family dog. They were called the nanny dog because of how good they were with children.

Since 1975, fatal attacks have been attributed to dogs from at least 30 breeds. So how will banning a particular breed change this fact?

BSL is definitely wrong and it is not going to stop at pit bulls once it gets passed it opens the door to bans on all breeds, large and small. In Italy 92 breeds of dog are deemed dangerous and if people here do not wake up we will be headed in the same direction. The next thing you know we will not be able to own any dogs and the only place we will be able to see them is in the zoo with the rest of the wild and dangerous animals.
I write to the government officials every time I hear a new state proposing BSL and I sign petitions against it. The best way to beat BSL is to educate as many people as possible.

After the United Kingdom banned pit bulls in the 1990s, a study showed that the number of dog bites remained the same even though the number of pit bulls had steeply declined. (Study cited in B. Heady and P. Krause, "Health Benefits and Potential Public Savings Due to Pets: Australian and German Survey Results," Australian Social Monitor, Vol.2, No.2, May 1999.)

Absolutely not. Every house around me has a pit bull, and they are all lovely, wonderful dogs. I also own a sweet pit bull that would never hurt a fly and licks my cats lovingly.

People are just too ignorant, and scared to see the facts. The media pumped fear into people - and even if the dogs were banned, that would not stop the bad people from having them, and the dogs that are trained to kill, and the dogs that are used for dog fighting, will still be on the streets.

Banning them is only punishing responsible owners. Because thugs will always be thugs!

No.

If well trained they are not vicious and make superb family pets.

It is the fact that they have a high pain threshold and powerful jaws that makes them attractive to chav's,junkies and other criminals who want to use a nasty dog as a guard or status symbol or to make money from dog fighting.

They buy puppies and treat them cruelly and teach them to be vicious, these dogs then attack anything that annoys them including kids.An example of this was the little girl who was killed by her uncle's pit bull a few months ago-uncle was a junkie and had trained it to be nasty.

As I say it's training not breed-a lab or spaniel can be vicious and more kids in the UK are attacked by labs than any other breed.Pit Bulls bad rep basically boils down to criminal owners and media hype.

The solution is not banning them but punishing people who treat dogs badly more seriously-they should do serious jail time.

When I was a young kid my friends parents had a Pit Bull and he was a lovely friendly dog.

By banning any breed of dog we are punishing the wrong side of the leash. The laws should be be made harsher against the only reasoning, thinking part of this team, bad owners. Everyday in this country there are 1000's of car wrecks that kill. So should we ban cars. We tried to ban some types of guns, the result was the gangs were better armed than the police. Men commit 85% of crime should we then put all men behind bars after they reach 12. 95% of all pit bulls are owned by loving people who take care of them, they never bit or snap. In most cases of pit attacks the dogs were abused, starved, taught to fight, chaind on short chaine in bad conditions, or let run loose. Not one of these things is the dogs fault. Instead of the wrist slap most dog abuser or fighters get now they should have to do hard time not the 90 days most get and in the case of fighting they should get a least 10 years and lose their property just like drug dealers do.

No. For it is people to blame for breeding these dogs for tenacious tendacies- being otherwise a powerful breed- but if one does have an agressive -vicious-killer pit bull it's because either the dog has been abused and pushed into the horrendous act of dog fighting or simply neglecence and sheer ignorance to dog psychology. Most dog owners cannot read their dog's body language either ignoring them or simply not understanding- this can be a terrible mix with people whom own powerful dogs such as this. Any dog can be vicious and horrible rumors about how much worse their bite is then any other dog breed-this is simply untrue. The problem is people who rather love their dog to death then treat it as a dog, without the proper socialization, exercise, leadership and yes, love, dogs can be dangerous. But it is our own fault for not understanding them better.

People should be more diligent on learning about dog psychology and what it takes to achieve a calm pack. Pit Bulls are terribly wonderful dogs and it's a sheer shame of what they've been subjected to.

Absolutely not. I love pit bulls and discrimination against them just makes me so sad. However, due to the idiot owners, I think all pit bull owners should be screened because some people like to use them for fighting/protection. I think every pit bull breeder should also be screened to make sure they aren't producing fighting stock...Oh yeah and the government can't ban pits and not fighting! Of course these owners will start doing their research and discover dogs more suitable for the fighting job. Stupidest law ever in my opinion.

No, there should be stricter controls on breeding and owning dogs in general. Banning any breed of dog is a cop out by the authorities for not investing properly in animal control. Anyone breeding ANY dog should be forced to buy a licence and register every single puppy. Any puppy without an ID chip should be rehomed. Vicious dogs are vicious because they have not been socialised properly. Shouldn't cars be banned for killing so many people, or Cigarettes for that matter? Banning one breed of dog will not stop negligent people from breeding more fighting breeds. MAKE THE OWNERS AND BREEDERS RESPONSIBLE, NOT THE POOR DOGS!!

I am a dog lover and own a English Mastiff so am not bothered by large breeds.I feed five street dogs where I live and pay for their jabs and vets bills. Most dogs problems are the fault of owners but not all.The pit bull as been breed to combine all the worst traits of various breeds to produce a fighting dog that a civilized society doesnt need.Yes ban them it as been tried to control them and their breeding without success in the UK now is the time to get rid of these poor creatures before another child dies and to prevent the tremendous suffering they go through fighting for the pleasure of sadistic brain dead dregs of society

Yes and it might help if they monitor the situation closely and prevent some of the twisted morons who think it cool to own such breeds as a status symbol without even training them correctly or following muzzling and leash walking rules...I do agree that a lot of the problem is with the owner but these dogs on the whole, and yeah there are always exceptions,.may be people friendly but are certainly not dog friendly...ask the owner of the dog in sandwell valley that was ripped apart by a pit bull running lose.

No it's not right to ban pitbulls. The dogs themselves are not dangerous unless the owner makes them dangerous! Any dog can turn dangerous if brought up incorrectly. This is what has happened with many pitbulls & why they have such a bad reputation. Most I'm sure make perfect pets.
