I have talked to my vet about this before. While it is unlikely, it can happen. Dogs immune systems are not quite the same as humans but they can get colds and flu. If you suspect your dog has a cold, don't give it 'human' medicine before talking with your vet. Some medicines for humans are ok for dogs at a much lower dose. My dog has seasonal allergies and we give it an over the counter medicine -- talk to your vet. It doesn't cost anything (or shouldn't) to get his/her opinion.
