1) he asked his followers to enlighten themselves with modern education and purify themselves by ancient scriptures.
2) he tried to bring food to the hungry mouths and asked his followers to do the same.
3) by his activities he raised the status of india in the eyes of the world.he established the feeling of brotherhood in the hearts of his followers.
4) he constantly reminded the people of their mistakes and told them to work for their salvation.

"The soul of man is like a piece of crystal, but it takes the color of whatever is near it. Whatever the soul touches... it has to take its color. That is the difficulty. That constitutes bondage. The color is so strong, the crystal forgets itself and identifies itself with the color. Suppose a red flower is near the crystal: the crystal takes the color and forgets itself, thinks it is red. We have taken the color of the body and have forgotten what we are. All the difficulties that follow come from that one dead body. All our fears, all worries, anxieties, troubles, mistakes, weakness, evil, are from that one great blunder-- that we are bodies. This is the ordinary person. It is the person taking the color of the flower near to it. We are no more bodies than the crystal is the red flower."

And that is why we must not hurt others. That is why I do not even care whether I have to starve, because there will be millions of mouths eating at the same time, and they are all mine. Therefore I should not care what becomes of me and mine, for the whole universe is mine, I am enjoying all the bliss at the same time; and who can kill me or the universe? Herein is morality."

He was a great Hindu. He strictly remained a bachelor and an example to his followers. If practised, the population can be much controlled. He introduced Hinduism abroad too. Hinduism is actually for Hindustan (India) only as its culture, tradition, custom etc. and not for Non-Indians as a religion.
