Why do folks use this as an answer? It's no different than people who only quote Bible passages.

Yeah, obviously it's irrelevent to the question at hand. Seems to be a defense mechanism, like they're saying "leave me alone already and let me be ignorant in my archaic belief system."

It's a response of frustration. It comes from having Jesus throw in our faces day after day (in the real world, that is) because believers want everyone to be "saved." It's actually about control, but that's another issue.
The point being it really isn't any of your business if me or other atheists end up in hell. It's our problem, and you believers need to leave it to us.

in most cases its a quick and easy way of being rude and suggesting that someones question is invalid or pointless, though i'm sure there are exceptions, that seems to be the most common reason.
