Works is MS's "cheapo" version of Office (which contains Word, Excel, Access etc.), they work but they're not up to much. Certainly not an improvement on the "traditional" programs as you put it. Often bundled by manufacturers.
Incidentally, if you want a good office suite but don't feel inclined to pay Microsoft's prices, download Open Office. It's virtually identical, compatible and above all FREE!

Microsoft works is different and i think worse than microsoft office which gives you MS word, MS Access and so on. If you want to take files from microsoft works nd put them on a computer that has word and not works, you must change the file name.
I wouldnt say they are an improvement, there just the standard as you have to buy MS offic seperately or include it in the price

It's the poor man's version of office, and was around a few years before they brought office out.
The only decent program on the entire suite is Microsoft Word that comes bundled as standard with Office and Works.

I had Works installed on my PC from the manufacturer. I used the programs, mostly the word processor, because it was better than WordPad...but, I find Microsoft Word in Office is the best. That's what I use now.

It's like a 'trial' version of Microsoft Office. Except it never ends but Office has many more features. Many computers have it factory installed.

They're cheapie versions of word and excel....used to be popular as an affordable option to the office suite.
I'm sure any office user will be able to read a works doc but might require a plugin to convert. same is prob true on your end...might be a add-on to read newer word docs
