I am 56 and I sleep in shifts. I will wake up about 2:30 then sleep till about seven and can go back down again about 9 for another hour or two. I take trazdone to sleep, I am on Prozac and take meds so I don't remember my dreams. I deal with depression and have PTSD from Viet Nam. I wish I could sleep all the time.

What ever your body needs too. General rule is 8 hours. But everybody is different, it can fluctuate. As long you feel well rested and energized after your sleep, it's probably a good number of hours for you. Keep an eye out for sleeping problems like waking up often during the night, insomnia and lack of energy in the morning.

Sleep is when your body regenrates and sorts out all the thoughts and experiences you have had in a day.

You need whatever you body tells you that you need. There is no hard and fast rule about this. If you find that you are only sleeping for 6 hours a day then that is probably right for you.

You'll find that you probably need a little more if you have a stressful day and less if you've been relaxing. during sleep, REM sleep occurs and during REM sleep, your brain sorts out all the days memories and files them away into the recesses of your brain. So if you've had a really busy or stressful day, you might need extra sleep.

Just go with what your body tells you. You'll probably need more sleep if you start worrying about it.
