Because they don't have any blow-hards who are full of hot air like Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, Michael Moore, Barbra Streisand, Jack Murtha, Bill & Hillary Clinton, etc. in Hong Kong.

Seriously, from what I understand Hong Kong is pretty crowded already, so much so they put their airport on an island out in the bay - maybe they could put some windmills on top of some of the hills but you know then there would be people complaining about how they look, the noise they make, the birds killed running into them, etc.

The other problem is whether or not the wind density (enough high winds enough days of the year) is sufficient to justify wind turbine installation. Not all places have high enough sustained velocity winds enough days of the year to make wind turbine power sensible. You need dependable power - what if the wind only blows good enough 20 or 30 days out of the year? Funny I just saw a map that would have showed that but can't remember where. Somewhere on line.

It does already. There is a 800kW wind turbine on Lamma Island, just to the south of Hong Kong island There is a proposal 'on the table' to construct a 100MW offshore wind farm to supply 1-2% of the city's power requirements, presumably with more to follow. A floating windfarm avoids most environmental concerns, has very clean airflows (little turbulence) and is easily serviced. I believe the Dutch are also looking at floating windfarms and may have constructed some already.

See the Sources below for links to the existing and proposed wind farms in Hong Kong.

And please note that despite all views to the contrary, Hong Kong has lots of undeveloped land. If you view it from satellite photographs you'll observe that there are extremely high density pockets of urban development, surrounded by virtually empty countryside. The high density is (a) a result of folk preferring to live close to their work, and (b) policy by the government to keep people close to public transport and to retain 'green' countryside for the purpose of recreation and water catchment. I have lived there.

With the commissioning of the territory’s first commercial-scale wind power station, Lamma Winds, on Lamma Island in February 2006, Hongkong Electric not only turned a new chapter in Hong Kong’s electricity supply history, but also allowed the local community to enjoy for the first time the supply of electricity generated by wind power - one of the many sources of renewable energy available now.

This is the official website of the Lamma Winds : http://www.hec.com.hk/hehWeb/MajorGroupCompanies/TheHongKongElectricCompanyLimited/RenewableEnergy/Index_en.htm

In my opinion, I think Hong Kong has very few area to use wind power. Although it's better than fossil fuel but it requires the area, strong wind and so many more factors.

LAND IS EXPENSIVE in HK. If u take a look at any pic or even Google Earth, all hillsides are filled with residential bldgs. And wind power is not enuf to sustain the energy demands of HK. Everywhere- ur surrounded by LCD TV;s, lights, displays... And also, frankly, its really polluted already.

It's not big enough- everywhere is building's there no place to put the wind generators and it doesn't have that much wind- the buildings and stuff are blcking it. Go there and you'll see

too many people and too much need for electricity
as wind generation requires a LOT of windmills
and land is precious

much cheaper to make coal power stations than wind turbines. There pretty poor so they have to buy coal stations.
