What if we were to study the books of all major religions, remove the verses that discussed law, war, women's inferiority to men, and the supernatural, and put all the rest together to create a book of ultimate morals and truths for humanity?

Are you suggesting this as a book of aphorisms rather than as the creation of a new religion?

I would say that it might give the flawed view that the religions those bits of wisdom come from are just as nice and fluffy as this book is.

If suggesting the formation of a new religion, I think it's a horrible idea. Religion is not needed to glean wisdom from many different sources.

If we were to make this book, then why not include wisdom from non religious sources like Nietzsche, Descartes, Aristotle, etc.?

Seems to me that it would be superfluous - and that people can already learn those things if they choose to do the work and research - work which is a value in itself to building character, imo.

As for ultimate morals and truths - I don't think there is any such thing. Morality is subjective, and circumstances should be taken into account when invoking rules of morality - something religious texts do not allow for.

Not really because 1) not all religions in the world have sacred texts, but do have valuable insights and lessons that humanity can learn 2) some religions do not have just one sacred book and in some cases are still writing even more sacred texts (Hinduism has no cap on its canon, for example, and thus the number of sacred texts is voluminous) 3) Not all religions' sacred texts discuss law, war, the supernatural, or make a statement about women's inferiority to men 4) what about the mythological stories in many of these sacred texts...stories that were used with great symbolism to teach lessons about morality and about our inner selves? For many of us unfamiliar with the symbolism we may not fully get the fullness of all the lessons from those stories.

For the most part I think it's a good idea to study every religion and even to feel free to read the many, many, many sacred texts that have been written or to go to religions who do not have sacred texts and hear their stories, their teachings, too.

If you'd like to read a lot of the sacred texts there is actually a great website to do just that at http://www.sacred-texts.com you can also visit http://www.religioustolerance.org which has links to other translations and is also a fairly good source for learning about other religions as well as http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion and of course the best teacher is the believer and practictioner of the many religions so it's always good to reach out and learn through them as well.

Great question.

Peace be with you.

to answer honestly I would have to read them all first to make sure that their were no confllicting ideals or other faults in the plan,
still no harm could come from reading them... if you really want to know if it would be a good idea, read them all. it may seem like a daunting task but, if all of us on here had told you it was a brilliant idea, would you have gone out and done it? or let it sit in cyberspace? go out and start reading, this is your idea, your inspiration and the only way you can know if it would be a success or a failure is by pursueing it. you may find that they are incompatable or you may find that they are compatable and your plan can go ahead, either way you will come out the better for having enriched your mind by learning more about the worlds religions then most (I assume of course you will have to deal only with major religions while it would be admirable to pursue them all this simply isnt possible, you'd never get through the reading!)
I say go for it. all of us here will give you our opinions but until you start reading you wont know.
good luck.

No, it is the WORST.

One God
[21:21] Have they found gods on earth who can create?

[21:22] If there were in them (the heavens and the earth) other gods beside GOD, there would have been chaos. Glory be to GOD; the Lord with absolute authority. He is high above their claims.

Never Question God's Wisdom
[21:23] He is never to be asked about anything He does, while all others are questioned.

[21:24] Have they found other gods beside Him? Say, "Show me your proof. This is the message to my generation, consummating all previous messages." Indeed, most of them do not recognize the truth; this is why they are so hostile.

One God/One Message/One Religion
[21:25] We did not send any messenger before you except with the inspiration: "There is no god except Me; you shall worship Me alone."

[21:26] Yet, they said, "The Most Gracious has begotten a son!" Glory be to Him. All (messengers) are (His) honored servants.

[21:27] They never speak on their own, and they strictly follow His commands.

The Myth of Intercession
[21:28] He knows their future and their past. They do not intercede, except for those already accepted by Him, and they are worried about their own necks.

[21:29] If any of them claims to be a god beside Him, we requite him with Hell; we thus requite the wicked.

The Big Bang Theory Confirmed*
[21:30] Do the unbelievers not realize that the heaven and the earth used to be one solid mass that we exploded into existence? And from water we made all living things. Would they believe?

[21:31] And we placed on earth stabilizers, lest it tumbles with them, and we placed straight roads therein, that they may be guided.

[21:32] And we rendered the sky a guarded ceiling. Yet, they are totally oblivious to all the portents therein.

[21:33] And He is the One who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon; each floating in its own orbit.

[21:34] We never decreed immortality for anyone before you; should you die, are they immortal?

[21:35] Every soul will taste death, after we put you to the test through adversity and prosperity, then to us you ultimately return.

Interesting question, although, what books are you talking about? Need a little more info than "the books of all major religions."

You'd most likely have nothing left because most of the morals and truths deal with men, women, war, and God.

Might I suggest expanding your search to other sites and compairing all the data?
