Teach him your language. Learn his.

And in the process, get to know each other really well...

Step 1) Find someone who knows this person and also knows both your languages.

Step 2) Ask them to ask him whether he would ever go out with a girl of this language group.

P.S - You might want to give a tad more details next time, like language, exchange student, age and context

I liked this guy who was deaf and I didn't know sign language, so I know how you feel! I think you should try to learn the basics of the language he speaks and try to talk to him....eventually I think he might be able to teach you a few words and you will soon be able to talk more in that language. You can bond with him while learning his language.
good luck!

Learn his language, and ask him to learn yours. I learned another language so I could communicate with my wife's family.

If you are REALLY interested make an effort to learn their language even if it didn't work out you'd have a great new skill

Teach him your language and get him to teach his language to you. That would probably a great way to spend time, and you will probably end up with your own hybrid way of speaking.
