My boyfriend of three and a half months and I broke up on Wednesday. During our breakup conversation I told him it would probably not be a good idea to join my friends and I (about 15 of us) on a luncheon for my birthday on Saturday. I re-invited him the next day over email and told him that it would nice to see him there. He said he'd love to come, but only if it was okay with me.

So...I'm not sure how to read this. I know he was very interested in maintaining a friendship after this breakup (to be honest, I don't feel like this was a full-fledged breakup), but I'm not sure if this means that he's still interested in trying to make something work...

I would have thought that having the guy you just broke up with at your birthday lunch would awkward, not least since you will almost certainly be obliged by circumstance to admit to everyone present that you are no longer going out. I would hold off on doing the "let's just be friends" thing until this break up is less fresh.

oh gosh, i'm sorry but ex's can NOT be friends. from my personal experience anyways. i dated a guy for 2 years and every little time we broke up we would make some dumb excuse to see each other and then we got back together...and it went on and off for those 2 years. we obviously weren't working but we were just so comfortable with each other we didn't want to date any one else.

my advice would be to be friendly to him, but do not act interested again. and if he does, take it really slow don't just jump back in where you two left off cause it will just continue the circle of breaking up and getting back together which, lets face it..is tiring and a waste of time

Let him come. Take it slow. Be a friend and go from there. Best friends make the best lovers. HOWEVER, just because he comes DOES NOT mean he wants to get back together.

I wouldn't read much into it. He's coming because he is your friend and I'm sure he still cares about you. He wants to come but doesn't want to make you feel uncomfortable. This does not specify if he wants to make it work or not.

He just wants to enjoy the lunch. Be friendly with him but don't gush. Then matters can take their course.
