What I think people often mean with this statement is that it's more impressive when strange things/events are real and not imaginary. Because of course you could make up anything, and though it may be strange and fascinating, it can be dismissed as just another example of the reaches of the imagination. When something happens or exists in reality, it can be something you'd never thought could happen or be anywhere but in someone's imagination, and therefore it seems truly bizarre and fascinating that it's actually *real*.
I don't really go in for this as a general statement, especially when so many things that were once fiction are now fact! Both states (reality and fiction) offer incredible stories, incredible possibilities. It's very cool to see what can truly exist, but without people dreaming and writing of what does not exist, it's likely there wouldn't be as much innovation. But the natural world certainly has the upper hand on secrets and strange details. There's more in the natural world than every human mind combined could create in a fictional world (but that's okay, because we wouldn't have the time to appreciate the fictional world; we barely have time to notice many things in the real one!) :)

Yes.
I often start reading one book, then another, perhaps a third one, and then return to finish the first book. So I'll end up reading two or three books at the same time.
I read a true, first-hand account of the Spanish conquest of Mexico and the novel "Treasure Island" at the same time. The novel sounded much more plausible than Hernan Cortes with 150 or so men conquering the huge, powerful Aztec Empire. Yet they did it!

Alot of the time this statement is true, but people who write fiction or make up stuff have pretty good imaginations these days.
