I don't see any statistical evidence for the statement "men are getting thin," and I don't see that *all* women are getting fat, either. There has been an increase in the weight of the general population in the US because of sedentary lifestyles and processed foods, but there isn't any large disparity among the sexes there. And "although fewer women smoke than men, the percentage difference between the two has continued to decrease year to year." (http://www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=33572 ) I don't really think smoking has anything to do with why any people are slimmer than others, except perhaps the fact that quitters generally do gain a little weight (usually under 10 pounds). There are also plenty of men who love food. Look at bar food menus and steakhouses---regarded as the stereotypical food men love---and look at how fattening that stuff is! I'm not saying all men eat it, or that women don't love potato skins; I'm just pointing out that weight is not about this, because it's all up to each person.

If you're noticing a difference between the weights of men and women (as a whole) in your community, it may have to do with a common lifestyle there. If you live where many of the men have physical jobs and many wives are stay-at-home moms who don't find time to exercise, maybe the moms do weigh a bit more. But if you live in a place where both men and women usually have desk jobs, you see some people fatter, some thinner, and it generally has to do with exercise when they're not at work. If you live someplace where some of the men and women work office jobs and some stay home, you might find that the people at home have more time to go to the gym, or that they sit around more while their spouse walks to the office---you never know. There are tons of factors in who gets overweight, who stays overweight, who loses weight.

But for most people who are overweight, eating is not a pastime. It's not like people just sit around eating all day for fun and get fat. And there are certainly many, many overweight people who smoke. I also think that those men you feel are thin because they smoke are going to reach an age where their health is so compromised by smoking that they won't be able to properly exercise anymore, and it's likely they won't be very thin after that.

Women naturally have more body fat than men, and men naturally have more muscle. It's hardwired into our bodies, because women need the fat for childbirth. Muscle, just sitting there doing nothing, burns more calories than fat. So on average (all things being equal and not altered), a man will have a better chance of losing weight, and is more likely to not be overweight, than a woman. But everyone's individual habits are what lead them to the shape they are, nothing general across the sexes.

I think both men and women are getting fatter these days. Men, usually do more physical jobs like construction work so they burn off a lot more calories than we woman do. Plus women are the ones having babies, so they store/need more fat than men do.
If people ate healthier and exercised more, there probably wouln't be these health problems....

Both women and men are getting fat. Smoking is not just restricted to men and both men and women are getting sick from smoking.

In general, men have more muscle mass than women, because men have higher levels of the hormone testosterone. Lean muscle tissues burn calorie more efficiently. Women have greater body fat percentage, so their metabolism is relatively sluggish. That's why women tend to put on weight faster than men.

Men often get jobs that require physical strength so all those KitKat bars and Snickers end up to nothing. If you're...um...not in shape I recommend taking yoga lessons. They can reduce all the fat. Also, after asking your doc, you can take pills which temporarily give a boost to your metabolism. Good luck!

Not really, there are also so many fat men. Perhaps it's because more men do the physical work, that's why they have more chances to burn those calories... so let's get to the gym! =p

Its probably because we're suppost to be the skinny people and thin people. The guys do a lot of muscle work, while we sit around in a office and stare at the computer.

I don't know if that's exactly true but women often get fat because they a) have babies and b) diet more than men (dieting makes you gain weight)
