In addition to the advice about using your collision coverage , you should also ask your insurance company about using your uninsured motorists coverage.
It is applicable in the case of a hit & run, & usually has a lower deductible. The insurance company will expect a police report which it sounds like you made. Your witnesses also help. The plate could have been bad for a number of reasons including the witnesses being mistaken, & possibly the other car having a stolen tag on it.
Go for the uninsured motorists coverage. That is what it is for (among other situations) Good Luck !!

I'm having some problems here with the "insurance not paying because of the incorrect tag number given" thing
Any insurance company worth it's salt would be paying the claim on a vehicle that they had under policy (full coverage) that was struck by ANYONE -- even if you had NO identification whatsoever to go on --- what it sounds like THESE people are trying to do is put the burden of YOUR loss on people who are NOT at fault for ANYTHING other than TRYING to help and simply misreading or misinterpreting the numbers of the other drivers plate number !!!! This is WRONG !!! Call your state's Insurance Services Commission and see what THEY have to say about this incident--- or call an attorney--- this sounds to ME like you are in the process of being hit a SECOND time -- this one a solid BLIND SIDE BY YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY !!!!!!!

If you have full coverae insurance your insurance company will take care of the damages, you still need to get the police to do an accident report even though you don't have the other drivers information. Your insurance company will want a copy of the report as well, not sure if you have checked with your insurance company but that should always be one of the first people you call after an accident to get things rolling with them. Sorry for the bad luck!

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I get the impression since you "just bought" the car, you didn't have insurance on it yet, or at least didn't have collision on it. Lacking that, if the witnesses got the plate number wrong, there is absolutely nothing you can do but have it fixed and pay for it out of pocket.

Make a police report, they will investigate and get back to you once they have the results. Otherwise, if u can afford it, hire a private investigator, they are more efficient and may give u the results faster than the police sometimes since they are paid to just look into your case. Then u can file a lawsuit yourself or passed the evidence to the police to press charges on behalf of you.

...relax... The police have an obligation to investigate... call the Chief of police... get his/her input... photo-graph your damage...get some real good "close-up's" as well as "all angles"... get the witness's names etc. did the vehicle leave any of it's paint on your car... recover that paint and put it in a zip-lock baggie... any parts found on the ground...? ...now is where the fun begins... call the local TV station... get one of their investigative reporters "cranked-up" about your situation, sit back and watch the show.... go for it...!!!

Unfortunately there's nothing more you can do. If you do not have the correct plate #, you're out of luck. All you can do is put in a claim & get your car fixed.

You probably aren't going to get anywhere with this; I once had the same thing happen and the police knew full well who did it it was one of there officers and absolutely nothing was done about it.

If you have full coverage insurance you can turn it over to them and pay your deductible. That is what I did when my wifes truck was hit in the parking lot of her workplace.
