How many times can you use the restore option without causing doing too much harm?

I used the restore to a date option to correct a problem with my sound now I can't download the new internet explorer. I get an error stating that it has to do with the configeration in that application. I want to go back in again and restore it to another date to try and fix this. Will I do more damage?
