Depends how long you known that person. The first or second date no. Get to know the person a little first.

Defensive?....I am not sure I would say it that way but you should definitely get to a point in your relationship where you should be challenging the other party about values, and view points and on as wide array of topics as possible. Why?...Glad I asked...dating is all about getting to know what you do and don't like in the opposite sex so that when you finally are in the market for a life long mate then you can make an intelligent choice which will lead to a higher chance of a loving and successfull marriage. So challenge away...you will be the richer for it.
Good Luck!

on the first couple of dates, try to keep the questions open ended, but no questions that will get her to reveal personal opinions. there is a couple of reasons why that is a bad idea. one, you might not agree with her and be turned off by her. two, she might feel like you are interigating her and be turned off by you. keep the conversation light and good humored, get into the deep stuff when the relationship is past the initial dating phase and into the more serious side of it. good luck.

depends on the person and that's something you'd have to be knowledgeable enough to know who would be able to handle such questions. you probably don't want to open up a first date talking about religion or abortion... there's plenty of time for that. and you just have to have a feel for the chemistry between you and your date, too. if you don't have it, you might as well call it an early night.

If the question makes her uncomfortable around you, dont ask it. The truth will come out, eventually, if it's meant to be.
