Most veterinarians agree that the every day dog food found at the super market is fine unless the themselves sell a specific brand.. Buy dry dog food to help maintain dental health and those that have a label that states complete nutrition or 100% complete nutrition because they cannot make this claim unless the dog food has this quality. Some claim that a higher quality of dog food decreases the dog's formation of poop. This is not necessarily true for all dogs. I tried Science Diet for 6 months on my dog, and it still looked like a man took a dump on my lawn.Just pick a nutritionally balanced dog food and stick to that brand to avoid gastric upset. Have a dog gone great year.

In order for the food to keep your dog healthy, it does have to be good.
Do this: pick up a bag of Ol Roy (walmart brand) or a bag of Kibbles N Bits and see how much your dog should eat per day depending on his size. Then pick up a bag of Iams, Science Diet, Nutro, Eukanuba, etc. and see how much your dog should eat. Notice the difference? Junk foods require the dog to eat as much as twice the amount as a premium food, because they are less digestible. This means that the cheap food actually costs MORE in the long run, plus it will create more poop for you to clean up, a dry flaky dull skin/coat, etc.
Some people will insist on Innova, Canidae, Solid Gold, etc. which are all great foods as well, but there is nothing wrong with an easily accessible premium brand such as Iams.
I guarantee that the good food will make a healthier dog.

High-quality ingredients are essential for a healthy food. Some economy brands of dog food are made from inexpensive ingredients that are not easily digested, and therefore, do not provide the best nutrition. While they may technically meet the legal specifications for percentages of protein, fat, carbohydrates, etc., these foods have lower energy values and lower-grade proteins. Because of this, many health-building nutrients may pass right through your dog's system without being absorbed. It also means that you have to feed larger amounts of that lower quality food to provide your pet with the same nutrition as a smaller amount of premium food. When you compare the cost of these foods on a per-serving basis, and realize how quickly you go through a bag, economy foods may actually cost more in the long run.

When you are looking for a healthy food for your dog, reviewing the list of ingredients on the back of the bag is a good place to start. By law, pet food labels must list their ingredients by weight. Look for meat, fish, egg, or some type of meat meal or fish meal as the first or second ingredient. Meat, fish, and eggs all have a high biological value, which means they have a high percentage of protein in the form of digestible, usable amino acids. For more information on ingredients, see the articles on:

Protein
Carbohydrates
Fiber
Fats
Compare the Guaranteed Analysis

The next thing to look at is the Guaranteed Analysis on the back of the bag. It is a chart that lists the percentages of various ingredients contained in that food. However, the numbers given in the Guaranteed Analysis do not take into account the amount of moisture in that food. All pet foods have different levels of moisture; canned foods can have up to 80%, and dry foods can have as little as 6%. To determine the actual amount of an ingredient in a food, or to compare between brands or between wet and dry foods, the numbers need to be converted to what is called Dry Matter (DM) basis. For more information, or to see the formula used to convert to Dry Matter, see the article "Dog Food Labels."

There is no such thing as cheap, quality dog food. All the brands which cost little or nothing are filled with absolute rubbish. There are many good foods on the market which will help to keep your dog happy and healthy. My Rottweiler (I got him at 12 weeks old) is now eight and I feed him mainly on a dry product, turkey and rice (large kibble) from a company called James Wellbeloved. I mix in one tin of Pedigree (beef and poultry in gravy). It costs about £1.50/£1.75 per day to feed him and he weighs 48kilos, so if your dog is a smaller animal it will cost you considerably less. He also drinks plenty of fresh water every day and his coat is always really shiny. Fresh water should always be readily available, it is extremely important. Don't be fooled, cheap is usually nasty and will do your dog no good.

Triomom gave you a very good answer earlier on.

There is no cheap dog food that is good for your dog in the long run. Cheap brands have lots of grains, cereals and corn - which is harder for your dog to digest. A brand like Science Diet, Innova, Solid Gold etc. would be excellent for a dog; no matter how old.

Just because your dog is not a show dog, it still deserves the best food you can get.

I am an animal behaviorist, and have studied animal nutrition as it pertains to canines in particular. With that said, The price checking is up to you, but a quality dog food should not list any grain first, nor should it be listed twice, as in corn, corn gluton, etc. Iams does not cause cancer, and no one could prove it does without extensive research. I have fed Iams, and also worked for a year as a consultant for them. They put the same ingredients in their food as any other company. It is how the food is procesed, and the quality. Your dog is a carnivore, and it is a good idea to feed your pet your table meat scapes for treats instead of bread, or doggy treats. Just be sure to take away some of his food that evening so you are not over feeding. The treat weight must be a part of the total daily weight of food he eats. I switch dog foods regularly. It is my oppinion that this reduces the chance of allergies, and gives him more variety in taste and vitamins that one brand may have over another, so...buy what is on sale.

We give our 2 year old Nutro Max Weight Control - both dry food and meat (cans). A salesman in PetSmart recommended it. Our dog lost 2-3 pound on this food. Dry food huge bag is $30 , and a small can is like .85c. But we split it into two, and give her 1/2 for dinner. That big dry food bag lasts a long time.

Most dog foods prices are similar. I am feeding my dog with Solid Gold. It's a trusting brand. I would say, if you feed your dog well, all you need to spend @ the vet will be the yearly vaccinations. So I think it's a good investment to put in good dog food. A happy dog is a happy owner. :)

In order to keep your dog healthy it should be a premium dog food such as wellness, candade, royal canin . anything you can buy in a grocery store or wal mart is garbage dont feed your dog that mess. you want a healthy dog you must spend some money on the food . My dogs and my mothers dogs get royal canin and my mom's dog is 14 yrs old and my vet told us she has the blood work of a 7 yr old she is that healthy . So you see my dear it does pay to feed the better food . dont be misinformed. good luck .
