He didn't feel like you were really dating is pretty much what he means. Before you didn't go on dates, or really do anything together, but you said that you were dating because it was almost convenient. This is only one suggestion. Thats why I wanted to break up with my boyfriend awhile back. Otherwise it could be that he is looking for something more physical in your relationship, but he came back, which means that isn't as important to him anymore and he realises that he really does care about you and can live without the physical side for awhile. i'm not in the relationship, so don't know whats been happening, but I think the first option is more likely.
