A special committee, headed by Dr. B. Youngblood, director of Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, selected the name from all the entries and announced it at the annual convention of the Sheep & Goat Raiser Association. According to the report, "chevon" had been chosen as the official name.
The committee reported, "Our reason for adopting this name is that it, like beef, mutton, pork, etc., is of French origin, being a contraction of the French words, chevre (meaning goat), and mouton (meaning mutton)." The winning name was suggested by Mrs. E.W. Hardgraves of Sanderson, Texas; she was awarded the a prize-winning Angora goat, donated by Halbert.

Goat meat is called Muttin. It has a very gamey flavor. I prefer lamb no so gamey, but yet delicious.
