Having severe mental illness or depression causes stress on the body which lowers the imune system which in turn leaves you open to colds, diseases, and other chronic conditions. Health problems such as developing anxiety, food addiction, drug and alcohol addiction, work stress, stress with relationships and so on. It is like a trickle down affect. The patients I see that have addiction problems also have dual diagnosis of a mental disorder as well as things like obesity, thyroid problems, migraines, and other co-accuring disorders.

The mental and the physical go together and they both can get worse over a period of time if not treated. I suggest you go to your doctor and let them know. But it does have a bad effect on mental and physical condition if gone untreated.
