The patient is a 22 year old female who likes to binge drink. She has never been treated for schizophrenia before since her symptoms didn't develope until recently and she currently isn't taking any other meds. Many first line antipsychotics cause sedation and are best not mixed with alcohol due to the risk of exessive sedation.

Please tell me what you would choose and why. References are appreciated.

Thanks!

None. Most psychiatric drugs have the side effect of making you drowsy so definitely these drugs and alcohol should not be mixed. She should either stop drinking and start with the medication or continue drinking and not take the medications at all.

You do not mix alcohol and drugs at all no matter what the medicine is. If the patient is going to start meds for Schizophrenia then she needs to be told that she needs to stop drinking. If she doesn't think she can do it on her own then suggest places that can help her with her drinking problem.

Sorry pal, there is no such drug. It is better to stop drinking, it will only compound the issue.
