The thunderstorm/tornado season is approaching and during thunderstorms my dog gets extremely nervous. She either sits and shakes like a leaf or paces around. The vet called in a prescription for Xanax for her that she can take before and during a storm but before I pick it up I'm wondering if anyone's had any luck with anything else. She's diabetic and on insulin & I'm sure the Xanax is safe but I really hate to start her on another med if it's not necessary.

I have used both "Ace" and Xanax for my storm dog. Ace will sedate your dog but does nothing for the anxiety he/she feels during the storm only makes them unable to react to it. Xanax actually calm the anxiety just like in people. As far as being safe for your diabetic pet, your vet wouldn't prescribe a drug that would counter-act with your insulin. I would sure rather my pet feel safe during a storm than anxious just because I didn't want to introduce a new pill. It's only necessary on a situational basis.

The vet prescribed it, but if you feel uncomfortable with it see another vet and get a second opinion. Sometimes benadryl helps calm an upset dog. It is milder. I would get a second opinion from a vet if I felt uncomfortable with a medication or diagnosis. That is what I would do for a person too.

My sis in law uses something on her cockatoo name Zoe before the fourth of July. I am not sure what med she used but I know it was a tranquillizer of some sort. You do not have to use the med every day just use it if stormy weather is coming,

Please don't use anything unless the vet told you it is okay. I have the same problem with my Pomeranian and I give her Acetylpromazine. If I don't sedate her, she shakes uncontrollably and walks in circles. It's only when thunderstorms occur and also the 4th of July. Poor baby!

NEVER give a dog xanax as it has not been tested on canines. Use a low dose of valium, that should do the trick.

No, but I have been so tempted. You can order calming meds from Jefferspet.com or the vet.

If the Vet prescribed it then it is safe. I used another sedative on one of my dogs until he went deaf and then the storms didn't bother him anymore.
