I just discovered that a loved one is shooting dilaudid (8x stronger than morphine). He has a bad heart and several other health conditions. I would like advice on how to approach him next morning. I fear for his life, so any insight would be helpful. Thanks

The keywords here are ,"I fear for his life." Apparently, he does not. It probably won't do you any good to try and intervene, but I know you feel you must. You can't change the way this person thinks, as badly as you want to. It will make you feel better to say something since you care so much, but please don't look for him to take action on any of it. He will only stop using when and if he chooses to. Yes, his life is in danger. But sadly, you can't fix that for him. It is his decision to gamble with his life. Nothing will change until he decides to change it. That is a very addictive drug he's banging and he will need medical assistance if he ever wants to get clean. If he's using a lot and goes off of it cold turkey, it could kill him. My advice is to gently let your friend know that you are aware of his activity with the medication and that you are concerned for his life. Let him know how much his staying alive means to you and if he wants any help, you will gladly help him get whatever he needs to get off the stuff. Then it is up to him. Don't be surprised if nothing changes, it probably won't. You are dealing with an addictive mind. He is really sick mentally right now, but he is still the only one that can decide to make a change of that magnitude. It may take a near death experience to get his attention, or he may even OD. Maybe just knowing you are aware and that he matters to you will get him to choose to get some help. I wish I could be more encouraging to you about this situation. I feel your concern as well. I will pray that you are able to get through to this guy before it is too late for him. Bless you for being such a friend! I truly hope that you can get this guy to turn his life around. Just be there for him if he needs a friend. This may get a lot worse before it ever gets any better. I'm pulling for you! Best of luck!

If you truly fear for his life, then hit him straight between the eyes as soon as possible!!! There is no time like the present. Why are you waiting? Call him on it and soon. How is he obtaining the drug? Put a stop to this at once. Cut off every avenue he has of getting money, drugs, etc., tell everyone that is around him, because he will kill himself with a substance like this. You may even be able to have him picked up by the police and have him commited for at least 72 hours which will let him dry out. This is very, very serious. Make sure that his physician (or all of them) is notified of what he is doing as well. Also notify the pharmacy of where he gets his medications from on a normal basis. Mixing other drugs can have horrible interactions and even cause death. My God, look at what has happened with Anna Nichol Smith and her son, Daniel. My heart goes out to you and the family. I have been there and done this and it is not pleasant. This road is a road of tough love and I hope that you are up for it.
