Collodion is a gel that was mixed with light sensitive chemicals and spread wet onto sheets of glass. The glass plates were placed in a camera and exposed to light to create negatives which could be developed and printed. The whole process was very cumbersome because the plates had to prepared just before use. If they dried out they wouldn't work. The wet plate process came into use at about the time of the American Civil War. Photographers like Mathew Brady traveled to battle fields and took pictures of the soldiers and also what the battlegrounds looked like after a battle. It was one of the first wars to be photographed. Photographer's couldn't take action scenes with wet plates because the exposures took more than a minute.

The process became obsolete when a way was discovered to put light sensitive chemicals in dry form onto sheets and rolls of flexible film.
