smart can be appiled to many different things, like street smarts or book smarts, intelligence is pretty well kept, and some say you really can't do anything about your intelligence , you had a predisposed IQ when you were born, then depending on your environment it was either nurtured or neglected so you either reached you full potential or you didn't, higher education will not affect your intelligence whil it may make you smarter in certain subjects, soem might also say that you need a certain level of intelligence to get a higher education.

I think the difference between smart and intelligent is a matter of perspective. An intelligent person might get really good grades, but perhaps doesn't know directions or something like that. A smart person may know how to navigate the world, but not proper grammar or algebraic equations.

Since the word intelligence (which means:capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding, and similar forms of mental activity; aptitude in grasping truths, relationships, facts, meanings, etc.), comes from the word intellect (meaning: capacity for thinking and acquiring knowledge, esp. of a high or complex order; mental capacity.) I deduce that to mean that an intelligent person has the power to think... and reason. A smart (meaning: having or showing quick intelligence or ready mental capability; clever, witty, or readily effective, as a speaker, speech, rejoinder, etc.) person is learned and can recite what he/she has learned. So, in my opinion, a smart person would have some education formal/ or informal, but an intelligent person does not have to have that (they simply have the ability to think, even if it is about things that they have learned; expertise). So as much as being smart and intelligent are different, in my opinion, they are still so similar. (The definition for smart often includes "expertise" which is learned or practiced.

I don't think there is any difference in the two words, and no, a person smart or intelligent does not have to get a higher education.

How about re-defining the question- what's the difference between intelligence and wisdom? Smart, like wisdom, comes from experience. You may have a higher intelligence (through education and knowledge), but wisdom comes from experience and using knowledge that you have learned over time.
For example, you may know how to fish from higher intelligence, but only through wisdom and experience can you determine what type of hooks and bait to use under certain conditions and for what type of fish you want to catch!

Smart and intelligent though seems similar have a vast difference. Smart is like implying shrewd or sharp, as a person in dealing with others or as in business dealings: a smart businessman, or like clever, witty, or readily effective, as a speaker or one can say smart like dashingly or impressively neat or trim in appearance, as persons, dress, etc. or socially elegant; sophisticated or fashionable: the smart crowd. Whereas Intelligent means having or showing mental keenness. Intelligent usually implies the ability to cope with new problems and to use the power of reasoning and inference effectively: eg: The intelligent math students excelled in calculus.
Nope it is not necessary that an intelligent person should be highly educated
