Their bodies are in the ground (graves) and their spirits are either in heaven or Hades. The moment you take your last breath, you go to heaven or hell, while your physical body remains in the grave. If you are a believer at the Rapture, Jesus meets us in the air to take us to Heaven. Right then, our body is raised to join with our spirits that come with Jesus in the air. We get new resurrected bodies and go with Jesus to Heaven. We're still the same people and will recognize others, but will have Christ like bodies. If you are a nonbeliever when you die, your spirit goes to hell and your body remains in the grave until after the 1000 yr millenium at the Great White Throne Judgement when you will face The Lord who will say "Depart from me, I never knew you" and you will also receive new bodies that will withstand fire, etc but they will not be Christ like bodies and you will be sent to everlasting hell, apart from The Lord forever and any loved ones who went to heaven. Now, for the Old Testament believers who died BEFORE Jesus conquered death on the cross and atoned for our sins, they went to Paradise/Hades, a 2 compartmentalized place. Paradise was the good side for followers of God and Hades, the bad side for nonfollowers of God. When Jesus died, He went to the good side (Paradise) and set the captives free (2 Peter) - they went to heaven now that their sins were redeemed by Jesus. No sin is allowed in Heaven, so before Jesus died, no one could enter heaven. Hope this helps. Discern any answers with the Word of God!

Time is part of the PHYSICAL REALM ONLY. 2Peter indicates that the entire realm will be destroyed at Jesus' return, thus time itself will also end. The dead no longer live in this time-bound world so wherever they are for eternity, they are there "now," though without time, "now" itself is meaningless. This view seems to fit well with everything the Bible says about "eternity."
2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow to keep his promise. He is not slow in the way some people understand it. He is patient with you. He doesn’t want anyone to be destroyed. Instead, he wants all people to turn away from their sins.
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar. Fire will destroy everything in them. God will judge the earth and everything in it.

There is no soul sleep of the righteous. Only the damned sleep in their graves. Those that have died in Christ now reside in heaven.
The spiritual bodies of the righteous will result from the joining of their heavenly natures with their resurrected bodies at the second coming of Christ at the final judgment.
Those that are damned will awake from their sleep to be judged and join Satan in their separation from God in Hell.

All spirits return to God when they die. The righteous stay with God, feeling comfortable in his presence. Those who spent their lives denying his existence obviously won't feel comfortable in his presence and go to what is called outer darkness until time for all men to be resurrected. And judgment day. I have read in the scriptures something about those being taught in spiritual prison, so some may be able to return to God after that teaching occurs. But I'm not sure of this!

IF YOU READ AND BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE, THEN YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE DIED ARE JUST LYING IN THE GROUND.
IN REVELATIONS, IT TALKS OF THE ARMAGEDDON AND THEN THE DEAD RISING FROM THE DEAD TO BE JUDGED. THOSE WHO ARE JUDGED WORTHY WILL BE TAKEN TO HEAVEN. THOSE WHO ARE NOT WORTHY OF THE GREAT REWARD WILL BE LEFT TO BURN IN THE FIRES THAT ARE COMING, AND TO LIVE WITHIN THE FIRES WITH SATAN.
SO BY THOSE THOUGHTS ALONE, THE CHURCHES PREACHING TODAY THAT WHEN YOU DIE YOU GO TO HEAVEN IF YOU WERE GOOD AND IF YOU WERE BAD, YOU GO TO HELL.

The dead know nothing. They have returned to the dust.
Eccles 9:5 and 10:all
Those who died in God's favor will be returned to life in the resurrection.
Heaven was made for angels to dwell, Earth was made for man to dwell. These are two separate species.
The punishment for sin is death, not burning in agony for an eternity.

When you die you go to heaven. but it is divided in two by a deep crevasse that no one may cross. The believers are with god on one side. The non believers are on the other side.

Well, when we die we go to one of three places; heaven, hell, or purgatory. If we have committed mortal (serious, deadly) sin and do not repent before we die we will go the hell for eternity. If we have committed only venial (smaller) sin, then we must go to purgatory to atone for those sins. Purgatory is temporary. It is a place of punishment in which we are cleansed of our sins. The Bible tells us that nothing unclean can enter heaven. Finally after we have atoned for our sins, we will go to heaven to be happy with God for all eternity.
