We had a very small one given by our close relatives...my gifts were:
A silver chip and dip serving tray (Very heavy and very nice)
A crystal cross with a sweet note (My favorite gift)
Handmade placemats and napkins for our dinner table
Bride piggy bank ( I collect banks)
Bridal magazines and organizer (Very handy!)
And a trip to Las Vegas (HA, way too pricey)
I think it would be nice to give something, it shows how much you care. Nothing major, just small. If they aren't religion haters, I think a nice cross to set in their home is a wonderful gift. Crystal makes it nice because it will match anything in our future home together. If anything, a nice card is something I love getting as well. So that wouldn't hurt a bit! :)

Personally, an engagement party-I had one-a surprise one from family-got a lot of nice gifts for our home. Otherwise, I have before that not heard of giving gifts at an engagement party. But for a gift, something small, not too expensive. That is, if you are invited to the wedding, and plan on getting a bigger gift at that time. As a gift for the engagement party, you could give a gift card for a certain store, or gift certificate for a nice dinner for the couple at a really nice restaurant in your area.

No, gifts should not be expected at an engagement party. The couple getting married sometimes give gifts to the guest. Some will bring gifts because they think they are expected to, but the couple should not open them until the party is over then send thank you cards. Do what feels right for youl.

No gifts for an engagement party. It's just a time to get together to socialize.

Something small since you will most likely be invited to the wedding where you can give a big gift. I would suggest a bottle of wine or a gift basket type thing. Good luck!

Yes. Give what you want. A gift certificate could solve your problem or just give cash in a card.

Yes and $$ is an apprpriate gift. However, if you are uncomfortable with that, a nice frame or crystal sometging is good too.
