WHAT IS NORMAL?
- For the first three to five days: significant swelling, light bleeding, bruising, and/or tenderness.
- After that: Some swelling, light secretion of a whitish yellow fluid (not pus).
- A piercing may seem healed before healing is complete. This is because piercings heal from the outside in, and although it feels healed the tissue remains fragile on the inside. BE PATIENT, and Keep cleaning throughout the entire healing period.
- Even healed piercings can shrink or close in minutes after having been there for years! This varies from person to person; if you like your piercing, leave the jewelry in place.
WHAT TO DO
To help reduce swelling
- Allow small pieces of ice to dissolve in the mouth.
- Take an over the counter, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen or Naproxyn Sodium* according to package instructions.
- Sleep with your head elevated above your heart during the first few nights
WHAT TO AVOID
- DO NOT PLAY WITH THE JEWELRY. Long term effects of playing with, and clicking the jewelry against the teeth can result in permanent damage to teeth and other oral structures. See the APP’s Brochure: “Oral Piercing Risks and Safety Measures” for more information.
- Avoid undue trauma; excessive talking or playing with the jewelry during healing can cause the formation of unsightly and uncomfortable scar tissue, migration, and other complications.
- Avoid any mouthwash containing alcohol. It can irritate the area and delay healing.
- Avoid oral sexual contact including French (wet) kissing or oral sex during healing (even with a long term partner).
- Avoid chewing on gum, tobacco, fingernails, pencils, sunglasses, etc.
- Avoid sharing plates, cups, and eating utensils.
- Avoid smoking! It increases risks and lengthens healing time.
- Avoid stress and all recreational drug use.
- Avoid any aspirin or alcohol, and large amounts of caffeine.
Eating
- Slowly eat small bites of food, placed directly onto the molars.
- Avoid eating spicy, salty, acidic, or hot temperature foods or beverages for a few days.
- Cold foods and beverage are soothing and help reduce swelling.
- For tongue piercing, try to keep your tongue level in your mouth as you chew and swallow.
- For labret (cheek and lip) piercings: Be cautious about opening your mouth too wide as this can result in the backing of the jewelry catching on the teeth.
- Each body is unique and healing times vary considerably. If you have any questions, please contact your piercer.

Swelling typically lasts for a week to 10 days (a little longer isn't unheard of). It will be painfull for the same ammount of time, maybe a bit longer.
For the swelling and pain: Take ibuprofin (advil) according to label instructions. You can also suck on ice chips through out the day. Swelling will usually be worse first thing in the morning.
Eating: Some people find that soft or liquid foods are easier to eat after a tongue piercing (soup, mashed potatoes, etc) Others find solid food easier to eat, as the can take small pieces and put it to the side of their mouths to avoid the piercing.
You don't need to worry about it swelling up that much, it won't kill you, just make you sound (and feel) like you have a mouth full of marbles for a few days. You should see some improvement soon
BTW Do not use mouthwash, even diluted. It's too harsh and will irritate the piercing. Rinse your mouth with 1/8 tsp sea salt and 8oz warm water a few times a day. Make sure to avoid oral contact with others ( no kissing, etc) for at least 6 weeks to allow the piercing to heal

For me, it started swelling three days after I had it. And it stopped swelling a week after that. It didn't completely go down to normal for two weeks, though. I was so tempted to just take it out. I'm glad I didn't.
I don't think that you're tongue swelling could kill you, though, I'm not sure. It might be possible. But, if it were true, it wouldn't be such a popular piercing.
The first 2-3 weeks are the hardest with eating. Because it's a new piercing, and with any oral piercing you have to re-learn to eat with it. And because it's sensitive. Also, with a tongue, it's especially hard because of the swelling. Just keep practicing and you'll get better. :P
Ice and IbProfin help SO MUCH with the swelling. I was constantly sucking on ice with mine. You definatly notice the differene between a day with ice, and a day without.
Hope I helped!

breathe thru your nose! LOL
The swelling lasted several days if I remember correctly. That's why the bar is so long, to allow for this swelling.
I didn't eat for 2 or 3 days. Eat jello and yogurt.
I've had it out for a long time now, but I remember my favorite thing was to take life savers and put it on the top ball adn the candy melts on your tongue.
It was very fun, have fun w/ it!

When I had mine done, I ate that night... I didn't feel pain at all. For the swelling you should take Advil and it shouldn't take much more than a couple of days for it to get back to somewhat normal. Just make sure that after everything you eat, you rinse your mouth with a half and half mix of listerine and water. More than likely your tongue isn't going to swell more than it is now.

First thing you need to do is take and ibprophen it will help reduce the inflammition then drink a really cold drink (a sonic slush is a great one) to also help . it usually takes a few days for it to go down just remember to keep doing what I said before with the medicine every 4 hours it will take the swelling down
Don't forget to keep risning it with listerne it will kill the bacteria in your mouth so your tongue doesn't get infected

No it won't swell to the point of killing you.
Take motrin for the swelling. But take it as directed on the bottle!
Mine took a full week until the swelling went down.

Hey...
I don't know how long it'll take to heal, but my guess is a few weeks.
For the swelling, I highly recommend non-alcoholic mouthwash (i use tom's of main) and sea salt. My lip was badly infected, and I used those two things every hour, and it got better.
Hope it feels better soon.
