I have an Olypums SP 510 UZ camera and when I have it in Auto mode when viewing on the screen whatever I focus the camera on is bright, but when I change it to Manual it's dark and you can't see anything as if the lights are off, It just started doing this, did I mess up a setting? Can anyone help me?

You did not mess up a setting. But when you switch from Auto mode to Manual mode you lose the benefit of the camera automatically setting exposure for you.

The current Manual settings are not good for the pic you were trying to take. To get it brighter you either have to lower the Shutter Speed setting (leave the Shutter open longer), or lower the Aperture setting (open the lens wider). Both of these allow more light to get into the camera, so the image will be brighter.

You may need to read up on how to use Manual settings. These place all the responsibility for getting the pic correct on you instead of the camera.

Good Luck

Well, first thing that comes to mind is that when you are in Auto mode, the camera is choosing the lens opening (aperture) and shutter speed automatically (according to it's internal light meter) and so is letting in sufficient light to expose the picture.
But, when you go to Manual, you need to move the aperture ring (f/stop) to "open" the lens aperture wide enough to let in the amount of light needed for proper exposure.
Put the camera in Manual and then adjust your shutter speed and/or lens opening and see if that makes a difference.
Do this:
set your shutter speed at 1/60
set your aperture to f/2.8
then point the lens toward a light or window.
can you see an image now?
