The stated reason is that it will be daylight when people get home from work, so they won't have to turn on their lights as soon, thereby using less energy
A NPR report says studies done in the 1980's when this was changed by Nixon did not result in energy saving...what actually happens is that people consume MORE energy by driving around a little longer and shopping - consuming more gas beyond the electricity they are saving by not being home. What it does do is spur buying and increase consumer spending.

I have a love hate relationship with daylight savings. I hate losing an hour of sleep, even if it is on Sunday, cause I am still not used to it by Monday.
They should change the time on Friday night to give us two days to get used to it....well maybe I should just change it tonight and I will be way happier!
Ont he other hand I LOVE the darkness in the AM, cause I hate sleeping when the sun is peeking in my window.

The original concept was to allocate more of the sunlit hours to the time that people were active. This would save electricity. In theory, it should continue to do this although I wonder if it really worth the hassle. If you have to catch a school bus in the morning, now it's dark again!!

The environment will feel good about us having more daylight time to worship our heathen gods of nature.

I don't think it will help. It assumes people are sleeping in too late and getting up well after sunrise and then staying up late and turning on lights, but I think people will just have to use more electricity in the morning because they have to get up before dawn.
