The 12 Links (of dependent origination) correspond to the Wheel of Life (cyclic existence) and explain how karma works. It starts with aging and dying and goes all the way up to birth. The cycle in reverse, in effect, stops birth or the grasping at the existence of self, which is at the root of all of our suffering. A great book called "How Karma Works" by Geshe Sonam Rinchen explains it in far greater detail than I ever could. Geshe Sonam Rinchen is the director of the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Dharamsala and is without peer. Check out any of his books translated by Oxford Ph.D. Ruth Sonam. Quite authoritative and geared to the Western reader.
