Well, a "cartridge" is actually a bullet (you may be familiar with that concept) Think of a bullet you see with the point, the point is the piece that flies out when it is fired, the piece "on the bottom" if you were holding a bullet upwards, is the cartridge.
The Cartridge is filled with gunpowder, when it is fired in a gun it forces the bullet out and it goes out of the barrell. Search google images for "9mm Bullet." You will see what I mean.

"Black Powder" is the early form of gunpowder. Just think of a pile of baby powder that is black, and when you touch flame to it, it bursts in to flames, burns out very fast, more like a flash.
In fact, before there were flashes for camera, the photographer would hold his camera up, and hold a small pile of black powder (flash powder) on a stand and light it as a flash for taking a picture. Not sure if this helps... =-)

The production of cartridge is a pretty long process that you could probably Google. Black powder isn't really a powder its more like granules like sugar. Salt is too small of a granule to represent black powder try sugar especially a pure cane non refined sugar its also a darker color to help represent black powder better. Some soldiers did put the lead ball in with powder and wrap and tie it up in order to be able to reload quicker. There is only one bullet in a cartridge. use about two or three tablespoons.
