Because they are better than you. They have earned the right to be called a marine. Marine recruits are to call all marines sir or maam. The day they earn the right to be called a marine they no longer use sir except for force of habit and are entitled to use that marines rank. Its a mind game marines play so its drivin into your brain that those who have gone before and earned that title are better than you.

A Marine recruit calls EVERYONE except other recruits either sir or ma-mm. It's what they have been doing for long before I ever joined and It works well. It teaches you that you are on the bottom rung of the ladder and have to earn the title of Marine. To this day (25 yrs later) I still use the proper term of respect when addressing my elders. It's part of what makes a Marine.
Paradoxically, Officer Candidates call their DI's Sargent. It teaches them they will someday lead (and be responsible for the lives of) men who are better than themselves.

Because that D.I. has gone through the same instruction and training (and probably real life hell) that the recruit can only imagine. The D.I. has earned the title of "Marine" even without the silver or gold bars. When that recruit graduates and becomes a Marine, it will be one of the most memorable events in his life. After that, he'll call officers "Sir" and all others by their rank.

How do I know? Because I was with those Jarheads for 2 years as a Corpsman and, even though I was Navy, I was proud to be associated with them.

One thing that the Marine Corps teaches the recruit is discipline. Calling a Drill Instructor "sir" is the beginning of discipline. It shows a sense of respect for the one who is in authority at the time. Semper Fi

I'll put it to you like this..when you are in the academy / boot camp environment you need to learn to grin and bear it...Things are structured and disciplined for a reason. No one wants a soldier or an officer to be a big P***y. You obviously didnt want to be there and obviously couldnt hack the discipline..If you were given a blanket party then you probably deserved it. Academy/Boot camp justice is quick and harsh...That way you know not to do it again...and the blanket party was given to you by your recruits not your DI .. so even your own brethern thought you were a maggot...Legality has nothing to do with it. Hazing has been part of military society in one form or another since its inception. right wrong or indifferent you and your liberal group hug views will not change that fact....Move on with your life and go be florist( no offense to florists out there) if your feelings got hurt so easy..or better yet Mcdonalds is always hiring. I think that would suit you better.

All recruits call ALL Marines sir. Once you are a Marine you call other Marines by their proper rank, or accepted nickname, like gunny, top, skipper, etc.

Man you better call them Sir or the next thing that will come out of your mouth will be the toe of his boot. Those cats are not there just because they can scream loud.
