I have a MS Word document I want to convert into a PDF file.
I do not want to convert the file to hml because there are lots of unique fonts, carefully spaced layout, and a few boxes made with the drawing tool.
What program do I need to do this? WHat steps would I take?
Thank you in advance for any answers.

You can do this in Word 2007 (Office 12), but that costs a decent amount of money. I know you can use Open Office and save a .doc to a .pdf file. Open Office is a suite of replacement products for MS Office that is free and open source.
http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/features/1.1/index.html - that tells you about saving as pdf files

You need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Professional. You can then PDF your Word document and save out the individual pages within Acrobat.

Take a look at PDFCreator. It is a free utility that converts files into PDF documents. I've used it for for producing newsletters for the youth football team I am involved with.

This website convertes it for you !
All you have to do is upload your Document on the website and provide an email address. The website will email you the pdf file as an attachment. Works great. I've used it for all my projects and presentations.

You want to convert to PDF or html? Word will let you Save as to an html file, but to save as PDF I have to workaround.
To save as html:
open the Word doc
File
Save as
for filetype click the down arrow and select html
To save as PDF:
I print the file, put it on my scanner which will scan and save as PDF.
I also have Print Shop which will also allow me to insert the file and save as PDF.
Sometimes it takes a little doing to "beat the system."
Followup note: I did not see your addition that you are working on a Mac. I am not familiar with Macs.

if you have word 2007, you can go to www.microsoftoffice.com to download the PDF converter addin for word
if not, you can download a PDF printer such as PDF995(google it), print the document through PDF 955 and it does the rest.
