I recently moved out. I tried to get a cellphone and they told me I need to put a 250.00 deposit down. I never had a credit card or any other type of credit. I haven't signed anything. I think that my Aunt (she used to be my representative payee on my social security check) had something to do with my credit beingt messed up. I appreciate all of your help. God bless you.

If you feel that your credit was tampered with, I would suggest ordering your credit reports and thoroughly checking them.

Go to the FTC site http://annualcreditreport.com and order your free reports. Do not use a site that requires a credit card (other then the original credit reporting agency sites).

As far as the cellphone, if you have no credit history or very little, a deposit is probably standard practice.

You definitely need to check out your credit report. Yes, you can get them for free. (I've posted a link below to the Federal Trade Commission's info about getting a free credit report.)

On the other hand, I also think that you're probably being charged a deposit because you don't have a credit history and haven't been at your new address for very long. Those things are considered high-risk in combination.

Still, always a good idea to monitor your credit.

follow the link &follow the intructions to obtain a free copy of your credit report. everyone is entitled to one free one a year by law. once you recieve it, go through each item listed and verify that it was a transaction you agreed to in writing. if find 'discrepencies' or items you didn't authorize, call the credit reporting company for followup instructions to clear the problem. there are books you can buy and a ba-zillion websites to help understand what the items on your credit report mean, how to understand it and fix any problems. it is not difficult. this is something that WILL affect your ENTIRE life. a large deposit on a cell is nothing, a grain of sand compared to what it will become if you don't address the issue immediately.

You're going to find that you need a second form of ID and a credit card in your name in order to function as an adult in society. If you're never done business with a company before, then you will be required to provide deposits. It's nothing new and they are not singling you out.

You can get a free credit report once a year. don't fall for sites that charge. Google free credit report. Also I think that not having any credit can cause the cell phone company to ask for a deposit.

They wanted a deposit because you have never had a credit card..sometimes not having any credit is worse than having semi bad credit...you need to get a credit card..capitol one..whoever...use it just a little bit..something you can pay off in a month..then use it again..a little bit..pay it off..establish your credit..dont go hog wild and get into credit trouble

I think the high deposit is because you don't have any credit history. If you are worried about your credit you should run a credit report( you get one free a year) to see if you have any open accounts or delinquent accounts.

If you've never had any credit cards or bought anything on credit, it means you have no credit history, and most places such as phone and power companys are going to require a deposit.
You have to build a credit history to HAVE a credit history.
