We are realistic.

For me it comes from skepticism. You can't trust anyone outside closest friends and family. Even then, do due diligence.

The other part is self-reliance. Everything my family has we worked for. No lottery, no athletic gifts.

And a part of lack of imagination. I've always been a hard-realist, even as a child. I disbelieved Santa Claus when I was 5, and I was really so upset when I was realized I was lied to. I hate it when people are lied to or fooled. I couldn't stomach any "funny" shows like Candid Camera where they would play jokes on people. I enjoy magic, and I only enjoy it more when I know how it's performed. Otherwise it really bothers me I'm being fooled.

Your question is about the unbelief in God, not unbelief. The human mind is wired for belief in something. There is a wide variety of of ways in which that wiring manifests itself. Belief in God is merely one of the ways.

I think alot of people try to bring Almighty God down to our human level and if they cannot fully understand God, then He must not exist. If they can't see it or understand it, then it isn't. What they need to realize is that God is GOD, Supreme, Sovereign, Creator, and so far above us we cannot fully comprehend Him with our limited human minds. Some are full of pride that feel they don't need God and then some don't want to have to answer to God so that they can do whatever they want - stubborn and foolish. In the end, it won't matter whether or not they believe in God. It is God who does exist and who will judge them.

I don't think people choose to not believe in the existence of a God, its just that they see no evidence.

Lack of evidence combined with logic and common sense. The more interesting question is what is root of belief?

The inability to accept things purely on faith with no compelling evidence. Especially when there not only is no compelling evidence but realistic appraisal would indicate the belief to be unlikely to be true.
