Golf is a lot of fun but it is very difficult, but the challenge is really the best part about it. The best thing you can do to prepare for being on your high school golf team is to sign up at your local driving range or golf course for a series of lessons. If you get proper instruction when you are brand new to the game it will make the game MUCH easier in the long run. Often beginners develop bad habits when they are self taught that take years to correct. If you can afford a series of 3-6 lessons to start do it... you will thank yourself later.
Secondly, it is also very important that you buy a set of clubs that is fit to your height, arm length, and swing. I know all golf clubs probably look the same to a beginner, but they are not! If you go to a store like Edwin Watts, Golfsmith, or Dick's Sporting Goods they will usually be able to fit you for clubs on site for free. You can also ask about fitting options from the Pro giving you lessons.
I know this probably seems like more than you bargained for but I know that it will make the game of golf much more enjoyable for you and you will be on your way to holding your own on the golf course in no time!

ps- get a rulebook too! they're free at any course and good luck with your team!

Lots of luck. A few years ago, I actually taught a girl who did exactly what you are doing. Her improvement over the course of the season was amazing. It would take a lot of time to explain everything about golf, but there's a great little paperback book out called "Feeling Naked on the First Tee" (no joke) and you can buy it through Amazon or search the web for other sites that carry it. It was specially written to appeal to women who know nothing about golf.

Basically, think safety first (use common sense); play the ball as it lies; and leave the course as you found it.

It's very important that you practice your swing alot and that you take lessons for they are essential. I just joined my HS golf team four weeks ago and before four weeks i couldn't hold a golf club, let alone swing. On my first day i was swinging about five feet at the range with my 7-iron and always topping the ball, but with lessons, i can hit my 7-iron about 110 yards, straight, and i'm still getting better. What you really want to learn first i how to swing. All the terms such as hook, slice, par, birdie, boogey you will pick up from your teammates.
Good Luck

#1 nothing rolls like a ball...# 2 hitting golf balls kills rain sells...main bells..make that brain cells #3 no matter how good your swinging and scoreing are going .you'll always be thinking ya could have done a little better.#4 in the long run you'll be happy that you started playing becuse instead of you.... your husband will become the drunken golfs widower. #5 the key to better golf is....KISS....grip and balance...if ya got those two down....your good to go....just ask the first guy on the driveing range that ya se smileing...you can guess that he has just gotta be hitting it good and maybe you'll get a date out of it too. Alass my Lass with the fine _ss we come to #6... there is always something new to learn about golf...so ya cant learn enough quick enough so ask questions; then play and practice as often as you can....next case.

Yes, lots of exercise mostly in the form of walking.

To start out you have a little white (usually) ball with a bunch of dimples. The dimples are to make it fly straight, that is unless you slice it. If you slice it, that means you hit it wrong and the ball goes flying way out of bounds to left or right.

You hit the ball with an assortment of sticks called clubs. The clubs have various shaped heads on the end to make the ball go up at a certain angle and distance. Your trainer will teach you how to properly hold the club in your hands to get the best results. The swing is very important too and you will need to be taught that as well. Now when you go to hit the ball, it is important that you keep your eyes on the ball the entire time. Don't look up until you have completed your swing. Looking up is a major cause of slicing the ball. Your foot position or stance when you approach the ball is important too and will affect how you hit. You will need to be taught the different foot position techniques by your coach.

Prior to starting with the team it may be a good idea to go hit some balls at the local driving range. Go to the driving range and buy a bucket of balls. They will let you borrow one of their old clubs if you don't have your own yet. Practice hitting a bunch of these balls around and using different clubs. The clubs rank typically as drivers (1, 2, & 3 woods) and irons (4-9) and sand wedge (for getting out of sand traps) and putting wedges. The drivers hit farthest and next is irons and lastly use the putter on the green. The closer you get to the green, the higher number of iron you want to use. You just have to get used to how far you hit with each one to get an idea of what is best to use in each situation. This will be difficult at first since you will be hitting all over the place.

The green is where you want to get the ball to since that is where the hole is located. You start at the tee and try to travel down the fairway which is the cut grass leading to the green. If you hit into the rough or past the rough you are getting into higher grass which makes it harder to hit. If you hit out of bounds you will have to take a penalty to get back into play. The green is the area where the grass is cut really short and has the hole located on there somewhere. Once on the green, you need to locate the hole and try to get the ball into the hole. Every time you swing, you accumulate points and the lowest points is the winner.
