religion is for those who are weak and like to think that something is keeping them balanced. so they hold what the bible says as truth. it also depends on your church and your up bringing. some people will not except that the bible isn't fact because then they might feel lost...or lied too. i would love for everyone just to have spirtuality with life and not whats to come after their life is over.

the answer to your question is no we cant be. human nature isnt good, human nature is evil. if you have a society that has no laws or anything to keep people from doing wrong then chaos will break out. just look what happened to the roman empire after its republic collapsed from corruption. the streets were filled with chaos and anarchy and "majority rules" philosophy until the government was reconstructed with an emperor. i'm not saying an emperor is the best kind of government juts that in this illustration God is the law, without him we will destroy ourselves. One reason that many people hate christians is because they say that we are too judgemental and they are right. Most christians just sit in the pew and judge the world. but the bible says that we arent supposed to judge people, just to love them for who they are. and you'll probably consider this really preachy but the Bible isnt just a bunch of fables and myths and make-believe stories. for example in the Red Sea(which is very deep) they have found an underwater land bridge that if the water was removed in that area would be perfect for walking completley across the sea. and on this land bridge they have found remains of egyptian chariots(remember that pharoah's troops were flooded and drowned when God let the sea come back down) and these chariots wheels have a number of spokes(it was either 6 or 8 i cant remember) and that number of spokes was only on the chariots used during the time period that the story takes place. that is just one example of many architectural finds that show how true the Bible is. this probably wasnt the answer you were looking for and it seems that you have your mind set that the Bible isnt true, but i pray that you will discover the truth.
EDIT: also if you take God out and decide to just have a society and think that rules will be enough then you have to question where your sense of right and wrong is coming from and then if you say what you think is right then people will start doing things just based on what THEY think is right and then there is utter chaos

YES! These believers would kill if their preacher told them to. The do not analyze, criticize or even question what is told to them . They believe it whether is true or not. Is an emotional approach inherited to them since they use reason.
You know how they say, do not talk about religion, sex, and politics in public 'cause you'll get some believer like these trained to believe that no other idea is valid. Everything else is wrong to start with...
And you see them going into crusades, inquisitions, whitch hunts, hanging blacks, killing Jews, and all that...
Imagine this is the people who think that God is full of mercy and forgiveness. Well, they are just not full of God. It's all about a social game.
Great job, Punter!!!

Actually the Bible is a volume of books by over 40 different authors, not just 1.
We cling to these beliefs because we have faith in God and many have experienced his power with their own eyes.
And no, without God, people are not literally obliged to be good and moral. Only god created the "you to ought to do this, you ought NOT do this." Without God objective morality is impossible.

Bill? Do you really know the story behind the book? If you did or if you regarded the story behind the book you wouldn't have any doubt about its authenticity and importance as Gods message to mankind.

I only believe in the absolute Truth and it is only in the Bible! But I'm not surprised you don't, otherwise you wouldn't knock what you hardly know anything about ,I say this because of your reasoning about the Bible which is obviously flawed and therefore you can't understand ,how could you, understand something you don't even look into?

"goodness and morality" will not get you into heaven. The "story" behind the book is the TRUTH of GOD. He prescribed one way to Himself and outside of that relationship with Him is nothing but eternal death. The Bible is ultimate Truth, and not one jot or tittle will pass away until all be fulfilled. And it is the "book" that you will be judged out of at the end of your life. Perhaps you ought to "rethink" what it means to you in light of eternal Truth.

Yes. Absolutely.
Some of the most wonderful, ethical, loving, nurturing, creative people I have ever known have nothing to do with these concepts... as told in traditional religions...
Spiritual has nothing to do with religious...
nothing whatsoever...

And yet thousands of people witnessed Christ? How many for evolution? Plus they took copies from all over the world and there was no difference in them? Did they all make up the same story? Or was it true?
