I have an addictive personality, the ritalin is too easy to abuse. I have so much success with ritalin in change, but I want to get away from the stimulant. I have heard Srattera is just as successful..any comments?

Possibly, if you can detox totally off the ritalin. With Ritalin being a narcotic med. it will be hard to kick the habit. Make sure they wean you off. My son takes Straterra (he has never been on Ritalin) but he went from totally hyper to the perfect child. It was the only option in my opinion because I refused to allow him to be put on a Narcotic medication that is usually abused and addictive.

As a healthcare provider my experience with Strattera has been varied. For some it works well...for others not. It's not, in general, as effective as Ritalin or other amphetamines. But I have had adult patients who do not want to use it because of past addictive problems. You will have to work with your healthcare provider to see what works for you. Ritalin is prescribed on a month to month basis. At our practice it is monitored closely. It is not refilled until the last script would have been almost gone. We make it difficult for the patient to abuse. And if we discover abuse, the patient is officially dismissed from the practice. It can be problematic. But ADHD needs to be treated. It can ruin lives and relationships if it goes untreated.

I have a sleep disorder. I cant fall asleep at night I lay there endlessly.I have adult ADHD and I'm Bypolar I never was diagnosed until about 5 years ago. I went through most of the promiseing meds they had and yes Stratterra. It did nothing for me. I also tried a few different Drs. and they all tried to put me to sleep but my body would soon adjust and I was back to same old problem. Finally I hit on a lady Dr. and she said we will aproach this differently Im going wake you up so your tired later at night she gave me metidate and a mild sleep pill. She did better then anyone else and Im still with her so I say stay with the up med. or you could sacrafice your sleep and create a whole new set a problems.

I'm an adult with ADHD, and I have been taking strattera a few years now. I had some bad mood swings when I first started on it, but I have since become calmer and more focused. It's working well for me.

Strattera was costing me over $300 for one prescription.
A new symptom of strattera is migrain headaches.
ADHD is not a life threatening condition. Though it is a pain to have. Depends what side effects you want to put up with....I to have been diagnosed with this...

You should talk to your doctor. My daughter tried Straterra and had to go back to Concerta. It made her manic, but all of our bodies have different chemical makeups. Lots of professionals that I talk to don't think Straterra is as effective as Adderall or Concerta. I know of an alternative method that has made a difference in my daughter's life, but you aren't asking about that.
