When you have two car seats the middle position is an option anymore, but the proper way and also the safest is to put the youngest one behind the driver and the oldest one behind the passenger due that 85% of the accidents occurs on the right side of your car and if that occurs (knock on wood that won't happen) the oldest one will be able to resist the impact better than the youngest one.
I hope this helps...

Well, they say to put the car seat in the middle to be safest but you don't have that option unless you have an SUV with 2 bench seats. It's really not WRONG to put a carseat on the side but they recommend the middle. Probably, you'll just have to put one on each side of the back seat. If you try to put one in the middle and one on the side, you won't have enough room for both carseats to be properly installed.

I have 2 car seats in my car, and I have on each side, meaning the middle is free. And then it depends on the child if it should be facing backwards or forwards.

in the back seat ALWAYS.
centre position is best, but with two..chances are they're gonna need to be separated. If you can manage with one in the center and one on the side, then do that. But I fear that when my new baby comes this summer, my 3 year old will be picking..so I'll have to keep them apart.
In the middle..away from side doors is best..least chance for side impact crashes to reach the child.
Good luck.

We couldn't get ours side by side so they are at each door. In one of our cars (Explorer) the infant seat is behind the drivers seat, and in the other (Corolla) its behind the passenger seat because of the limited space between seats.
