Because they aren't being taught anything meaningful. It's all about teaching and learning what's on the standardized tests. The love of learning has been tested right out of them!

Life is all about surviving and figuring out what you need to survive. It's like each one of us is preprogrammed to question our own survival and doubt the advice given by others. Students are always learning- and study constantly, but what they are studying isn't always what the teacher is focused on. Some see great worth in video games, or internet, or memorizing song lyrics, and some in academics.
Now you could say that a teacher needs to make academics seem like it's more important than all the other things the student thinks are more important- but would that actually be true? I memorized the entire song "Ice Ice Baby" when I was in school- obviously for some reason (I don't know now- but I imagine it was in an attempt to be cool)- and I have a good understanding of world history- but most of that didn't come till after high school when my knowledge of world history became more valued than my knowledge of Vanilla Ice. My point is that when academics become valued by your world- they become valued by you. (and by world- I mean your individual world). Students lack academic ambition because there is no seeable value in their worlds for it.

I think they're overwhelmed...it starts at an early age...I can remember being in middle school, and being expected to be in all these extra-curricular activities, which only continued through high school. It's like you're expected not to hav any time on your hands, and if you have free time, you're lazy. I'm not sure....you've asked an excellent question...I've wondered it myself.
