She'll chase it, pick it up, and then run circles around me. As funny and cute as it is, I'd like to throw the ball *an impossibly large tennis ball Dad came home with that she somehow picks up* and have her bring it back. Would throwing it and tempting her with a 'treat" *kibble, to tel the truth, but she don't know* be enough to help her "get" it? Is there something else?

Fetch is possible for dogs not in the retreiver *not sure if that is the right term, but like labs and goldens and such* group, right?

She's fixing to start obedience classes, and i'm pretty sure that'll help, but is there anything I can do sooner?

Sigh. Why is it so hard for people to get the use of food?

Using food isn't cheating. It is using currency the dog understands. You just randomize it, then fade it as the dog starts to learn.

However, start with regular tennis balls, at least 2. If you stand still, throw the ball and she does the fetching and running around thing,
stand your ground.
show her the "new" tennis ball when she is close to you.
Fake the throw.
Usually, they will drop what they have to go get the new ball.

Oh, man I can't believe some of the answers!! Here, dude, this is how to train a dog to come back with the ball. put your dog on a long leash or rope. About 12'-15' Then roll the ball out about that far or less. When the dog get the ball in his mouth start doing two things at the same time. Rave to your dog about how great and smart his is or tell him he's an idiot but make it sound really good. And reel him in really quickly to you and pet him really good, make a big fuss. If he drops the ball while being reeled in. Stop the raving, get the ball and the dog back to you and start over again. Keep this up until you get the dog and the ball back to you together. Let him know what a genious he is for figuring this out. Keep doing the fetch with him on the leash until you can try fetch with him off the leash. This will take from a couple of sessions to a zillion depending upon how much the dog wants to play fetch and gets into pleasing you. I use a racquet ball it's just the right size and no fuzz to put off the mouth or wear down the teeth. I have two of the same breed, one loves fetch beyond all imagining and the other acts like I'm insulting his overall status in life, trying to get him to bring me a ball. So there is a williness on the dogs part that is required. I don't do frisbee with my short legged dogs, they just never got interested in catching the moving object and would wait for it to fall first and then couldn't get it up without frustration. So we gave up on that. Someone else will help with that one. There ya go! Have fun. This method works.

Any breed can fetch, some pick up on the game naturally, some have to be taught.

You teach it backwards. Put your dog in a sit, hand her the ball, then reward her for giving it back to you. She learns that handing you the ball is a good thing. Never chase her when she has the ball-she may enjoy that more than the fetching. Instead, end the game at once. She'll learn that to continue the game she'll have to bring it back.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aL3Ab

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Get a ball and put a really long rope on it. Throw it and tell her to come as your pulling her and the ball toward you. Take it from her mouth and say drop it or release. Keep doing this over and over until she brings it to you without you having to pull her in on with the rope. My dog just recently, yesterday, finally started to give the ball up without a fight or play. Good luck!

After the dog knows it's name
1. Call the dog over
2. Show the dog the ball/frisbee
3. Throw object (If they don't run after it run with them to the object then once they pick it up back away and call their name)
4. Call dog or if it doesn't come walk over and take object and try again.
5. Repeat until they know the steps aswell

Good luck i hope you have fun! Please pick me for best answer after all I've treained all three of my dogs!

It's really pretty simple. With a dog at the stage yours is at put a long lead on the dog (20-50 foot rope) and when you give your recall command real it in like a fish.

What you are dealing with isn't a retrieving problem, it is a recall problem. Recall is about as hard as it gets for a dog.

have your dog sit in front of you try throwing treats at him don't worrie if you hit him in the face and he doesn't catch it at first.Keep trying and sooner or later he will start catching it.It might take a week or two but he will get the idea and start catching it.Some dogs are slow learners then others.
