Usually the symptoms that you just described are typical effects after consuming dairy products. If this is producing the same result with orange juice, I recommend not drinking it (as well as consuming any dairy) at Least and 1 1/2 to 2 hours before singing, as the phlegm and mucus tends to build up in the throat, making singing difficult.

It could possibly be the problem. You might want to go see an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) doctor for this. I had the same problem. I was drinking a lot of fruit juices when I had my tonsils taken out, and then I started getting that nasty phlem in my throat. I saw an ENT shortly after that, and he checked my throat and said that I had acid reflux. That could be a big problem with your voice. With that stuff in there, it's really hard to sing - trust me, I've done this numerous times. But now I'm a lot better since I have Acid Reflux medicine.

If you don't want the really expensive medicine, get the Acid Reducer medicine at Wal-Mart.

If you want more info on this, try webmd.com and search the site for more info on acid reflux - they might give you more detail on this than I do. Good luck with that! =)

This is perfectly normal. Orange juice and other acidic fruit juices produce the same results as dairy. I think some or more sensitive to it than others. It happens to me and there is nothing wrong with my vocal cords. The person who suggested that this is a medical problem is just plain wrong. It's very simple: don't drink OJ before you sing. Best to you.

Orange Juice wil lproduce a lot of phlegm - so do dairy products. It's fine to drink them but when you are getting ready to sing (like an hour before or so) you should really be drinking something with a neutral Ph - like, water. If you have to drink something with flavor, try tea- hot or cold, or anything without a lot of sugar in it. Water is reallly the best- water with lemon in it is good to. So is hot tea with a touch of honey and lemon. Try it - they do not produce phlegm.

Orange juice has acids and sugar in it, which produced as similar effect as soda pop, which voice teachers will tell you NOT to drink before a lesson, performance, or practice.
