Mastiffs are enormous, powerful dogs. A very important factor the owner must have is experience in training dogs to be obedient, and also the general health to control such a powerful dog (for example, a mastiff would be a poor choice for an elderly person). If you don't have experience with powerful breeds, and if you've never trained a dog, I wouldn't recommend a mastiff.
Some pros are that they don't need much exercise, are quite calm and laid-back (except when they're puppies), and don't need much grooming.
Some cons are that they take up a lot of space, they can be extremely destructive if they're neglected, and some mastiffs have tendencies to be aggressive if they were poorly bred or if they weren't socialized enough. And aggression is very dangerous in a dog of such huge size and strength, so it's important to get a puppy only from a reputable breeder with friendly, non-aggressive dogs, and to know how to properly socialize and train a dog. Even a human-friendly mastiff can be a potential danger to other animals, since they have a tendency to be dominant or otherwise aggressive with other animals. And when a mastiff is in a dog fight, it's like an elephant charging!
Some other negatives are that mastiffs slobber, drool, and shed heavily. They aren't built very naturally, so they tend to have breathing problems like snoring, snuffling, and wheezing. They also tend to be gassy. Since they're a giant breed, they have a short lifespan and are prone to lots of health problems, particularly with the bones and joints. Finally, they're strong-willed and need a firm, consistent owner to provide leadership and training.

Plus-big, protective, loyal.
Negative-really big, short lived compared to smaller dogs, and due to size obedience training is a must or behavior will be a negative.
Drooling could be a problem if that bothers you, also watch for hip problems in any giant breed.
