There are two types of poison ingestion; corrosives and non-corrosives. Describe the symptoms of each type of poison and the first aid treatment for each type. Why is there an important difference in the first aid treatment?

Do you know how many chemicals, poisons, corrosives, non-corrosives, herbicides, insecticides etc there are? Hundreds of thousands, and each and every one of them have different signs & symptoms and First Aid treatment is at times vastly different to the other.

This is why all chemicals, poisons, corrosives and non-corrosives etc have a Material Safety Data Sheet, known as a MSDS. OH & S (Occupational Health & safety) require workplaces MUST have them for each and every chemical, etc they have on the premises.

If there is any accident while usuing these chemicals etc, they have a CORRECT information on how to treat the victim/s until medical aid arrives.

These sheets identify the product, common names, list of ingredients, which are hazardous, relevant physical and chemical characteristics of the product (including vapor pressure, flash point, explosiveness etc).

Then relevant health hazards, including signs and symptoms of exposure, and any medical conditions that maybe aggravated by exposure to the chemical. Emergency and First aid procedures, including if other emergency services that maybe needed.

Different poisons can have different symptoms. Corrosion is when the chemical eats away at matter. Your best bet is to identify the poison ingested and call poison control. Follow their instructions carefully.

Agree with Georgie, but in simple terms corrosives burn and destroy tissue, both going in and out. You DO NOT induce vomiting. Read the warning labels, preferably before using any chemical, even household. Follow the instructions, and in an Emergency, call 911 and then Poison Control 1-800-222-2212.
