Let me suggest a Ford Focus. Get one that is about 1 or 2 years old. That way it is still under warranty and you can get it cheaper than a new one. I don't know how your state is, but in KY you don't have to pay sales tax on used cars that been already registered in the state. So you save again with the taxes, and even the insurance will be a little cheaper.
God bless you and good luck

Go to Hydaui; Try an Elantra --- 10 year 100,000 mile warranty and if you get the vehicle serviced at the Hydaui dealership (about $37.00 every 4,500 miles) the vehicle will be warranty for 150,000 miles. Also, 5 year unlimited mile road side assistance ( tire flats, lock outs, out of gas, vehicle brakes down) they will send someone out to get you going. If they can't get you going they will give you another car to drive til yours is repaired. They will hand wash the vehicle every time you want or each time you have the vehicle serviced or repaired. The insurance is very cheap due to all the safety equipment. Don't believe the mileage sticker on the window - it said 28 to 36 mpg but; we get 37 mpg combined driving. You can get into a brand new one for under $350.00 a month with zero down, no trade and no cash up front for tax, title or license. Check it out -- I think you will be very glad you did. Nice Car, plenty of room, nice ride, quite, power windows, door locks, CD with MP3 hook up. big trunk. cruse control, and anti thief protection.

How about the Honda Fit? Costs around $15K and gets 38 MPG on the highway. The Fit can seat 4 people and the seats can be laid flat or in such a way to allow for reclining from the back seat.

i own a repair shop, and one of the best little cars on the market right now is a Nissan sentra, they give really good service, and are very cheap operated also,i believe in buying American ,but right now i don't know of any other car that will hold up as well, and last as long as a Nissan will, i do a lot of repair work, and the one car that i see the least of is a a Nissan ,so all i can do is recommend that you at least test drive one,and see for your self,i wouldn't recommend anything to anyone unless i have tried it my self,i own a one,and i like the 44 miles to the gallon I'm getting with it right now,but try looking at a few of these ,they are priced good, and will hold up well ,good luck i hope this helps.

Any of the small Saturn vehicle line should work well. Also I have a Ford Focus that is very low maintenance and pretty economical. However given the option go with the Saturn they tend to have better warranties.
