I want to know what type of electronic component to use to regulate mains (230V) AC power. for example if it was 5V DC I would use a transistor, but they would have a diode effect on AC and I don't think they would work on 230V anyway. I think a SRC would still have a diode effect.

Yes a triac would do the job. Have worked with them in the past, and they work well, Twin SCR's would also do the job, but they take more effort to set up and use.

I'm not quite sure if this is what you're asking for, but a power conditioner will regulate the voltage and filter out noise. These are used for sensitive electronic devices.

But if you need a DC power source, then you need a power supply.
